Workshop 1
Ages 5-8 • Approximately 60 min • Can be adapted to a 30 min presentation for younger children
In this presentation author illustrator Carey Sookocheff will share what it is like to be a picture book illustrator through her earliest drawings to her current work. She will also read her recent picture book A PERSON CAN BE which explores how people can experience different emotions at the same time. Afterwards learn how to draw faces! Not just happy ones, but sad, worried, scared and angry faces! Using simple lines and shapes we will explore how we can convey emotions in our drawings of people.
Workshop 2
Ages 5-10 • Approximately 60 min • Can be adapted to a 30 min presentation for younger children
In this presentation author illustrator Carey Sookocheff will share what it is like to be a picture book illustrator through her earliest drawings to her current work.
She will also discuss and read her recent picture book The Remembering Stone which is based on Carey’s personal experience of remembering her grandfather. Although it deals with loss, the book also explores how small everyday actions can connect us to those we love. This will be followed by an activity that focuses on using our own experiences as the basis for pictures and stories. Everyone will get to create their own sketchbook to start drawing or writing their ideas. Using 11×17 paper we can create accordion books or a more sophisticated 8 page book depending on the age of the audience. We will discuss how simple items like stones, sticks and leaves and our memories can be used to begin drawing or writing a story.
Workshop 3

In this presentation author illustrator Carey Sookocheff will share what it is like to be a picture book illustrator through her earliest drawings to her current work.
She will also read her recent picture book A Person Can Be which explores how people can experience different emotions at the same time. Biography
Author-illustrator Carey Sookocheff graduated from Carleton University with a degree in English Literature, studied Illustration at the Ontario College of Art and Design, and has been an illustrator for over 20 years. She has illustrated for many publications including the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. Her work earned recognition from the Society of Illustrators, Communication Arts, American Illustration, as well as a National Magazine Award. Carey now works creating picture books and has more than ten books to her credit, including the critically-acclaimed Buddy and Earl series, I Do Not Like Stories, What Happens Next, as well as Lost Things and Solutions for Cold Feet and Other Little Problems, which she both wrote and illustrated. Her publishing clients include Kids Can Press, Owl Kids Books, Groundwood, Tundra Books and Henry Holt. Carey teaches part time in the Bachelor of Illustration program at Sheridan College. She lives in Toronto, with her husband, two kids and their dog Rosie.
