He’ll also reveal the real-life cats who inspired his picture book, True Story, and share the creative process with some behind-the-scenes images of the illustrations in progress.
Edge of Your Seat (Grades 4 – 8)
Marty shares the secrets to writing conflict and tension in stories. Using his novels Final Cut, Haunted Hospital, and Keepers of the Vault as examples, he reveals how to keep readers on the edge of their seats from the first page to the last page. He highlights key concepts of how descriptive writing can create a mood or atmosphere and the importance of raising the stakes for the protagonist. This virtual session is full of tech surprises that will engage even the most reluctant learner.

Biography
Marty Chan writes books for kids, plays for adults, and tweets for fun. He wrote the bestselling book, Haunted Hospital. This Orca novel for reluctant readers has gone into second printing and is being translated to French. He’s a community builder who has taught workshops across Canada and presented over 1,000 virtual sessions during the pandemic. His latest novel is Final Cut. Marty works and lives in Edmonton with his wife Michelle and their two brand-new kitties.
