Workshop Information:

WORKSHOP ONE (Ages 13+)

Since the book deals with teen mental health, the workshop will delve into different strategies for positive mental health. The workshop takes place as follows:

  1. author’s journey through mental health and writing success (20min)
  2. information about how it is important to develop mental health strategies at a young age to combat potential mental illness in adulthood (10min)
  3. try some simple mental health strategies (20min)
  4. read aloud from WHITE LIES (specifically a part concerning a mental health strategy for the main character) (10min)

 

WORKSHOP TWO (High school+)

This workshop teaches students how to write for the screen (e.g. screenplays) including quick tips and formatting, etc. The workshop takes place as follows:

  1. authors’ journey through manuscript and screenwriting success (20min)
  2. read aloud from the writer’s published book (10min)
  3. lesson on how to write a screenplay including information on a valuable software program (FadeIn) (30min)

Biography

Sara de Waard is an author and screenwriter of Métis descent and is currently in the process of exploring her family’s heritage. She is an elementary school teacher and freelance social media manager with a love for film and a soft spot for rap and hip-hop music thanks to her two teenagers. Her writing is often inspired by her compassion for the trials and tribulations of today’s youth. After completing her BA in Radio and Television from Toronto Metropolitan University and a stint in London, ON, de Waard returned near her hometown of Port Colborne, ON where she currently lives with her kids.
